How to differentiate worksheets for mixed-ability classes
Differentiation fails most often not because teachers do not understand it, but because doing it by hand for every lesson is not survivable. Here is the practical version.

Differentiation is not three different lessons
The goal is one lesson that every student can genuinely access, not three parallel classes running in the same room. Everyone keeps the same topic and the same learning objective. What changes is the support a student gets on the way there and the depth they are pushed to. If your below-grade version teaches something different from your on-grade version, you have not differentiated — you have split the class.
Lever one — language and load
The fastest way to lock a student out of a worksheet is vocabulary and sentence length, not the concept itself. Shortening sentences, replacing low-frequency words, and cutting the number of items on the page removes barriers that have nothing to do with whether the student understands the material. This is also the lever that most often gets confused with lowering expectations, and it is not the same thing.
Lever two — scaffolding
Scaffolding is the support you add so a student can do work they could not do unaided: word banks, sentence starters, worked examples, a multi-step problem broken into its steps, a hint that names the strategy. The important property of a scaffold is that it is removable. You are aiming to eventually not need it, which means it should be visible and deliberate rather than baked permanently into the task.
Lever three — cognitive demand
For students working above grade level, the answer is rarely more questions. It is harder questions. Move from recall toward analysis, evaluation, and creation: ask why rather than what, ask students to compare two cases, to justify a choice, or to apply the idea in a context you have not modelled. More of the same work is busywork, and strong students recognise it instantly.
The mistakes worth avoiding
Do not differentiate by quantity alone — giving struggling students fewer problems and advanced students more is the most common shortcut and it teaches the wrong lesson to both. Do not make the differentiation visible in a way that labels students publicly. And do not attempt to differentiate every single task; pick the lessons where the spread in your room actually bites, and let the rest be common.

How many levels should I actually make?
Three is usually the practical ceiling: below grade, on grade, and above grade. More than that becomes unmanageable to hand out and to mark, and the gain is small.
Should students know which version they have?
Keep the versions visually identical and avoid labelling them by difficulty on the page. Students are quick to read a hierarchy into it, which undermines the point.
Does differentiating mean lowering standards?
No. The learning objective stays the same for every student. What changes is the scaffolding on the way to it and the depth students are pushed beyond it.
